In a neighbor :
A woman: Wow, Scarlett just throws the best parties.
Another woman: I'm gonna go find Asra. There's Victor.
A third woman: Then I'll see who I can find.
People are talking. On the floor, a door is opening and a blond woman leaves the bathroom. She looks sick and she can’t breathe. She arrives on a balcon and falls on the ground. People scream.
A man (probably the victim’s husband): Scarlett! Scarlett! Call an ambulance!
A little boy, probably the victim’s kid, arrives.
The little boy: Mom.
The boy’s father: No, Oscar, stay up there!
At the CBI’s questions room:
Jane is hypnotizing a prisoner.
Jane: Look at it, George. Beautiful, isn't it? Now relax. Don't you feel happy and relaxed?
George (closed eyes): Yes.
Jane: Say it. Tell me how you feel.
George: Happy and relaxed.
Jane (walking around him): That's good. That's very good. (Two men are watching him behind the window and look impressed) So tell me, George, what's your date of birth?
George: I was born on the 1st of March 1980.
Jane: And what's your mother's name?
George : Melody.
Jane : That's a very nice name.
George : She was a good woman.
Jane : She liked you to tell the truth, didn't she, George?
George : Yes.
Jane : So tell me, how did you murder Donovan Hobar...
Lisbon comes into the room.
Lisbon : Jane, I'm sorry to interrupt, but we just caught a red ball. You gonna be much longer with this one?
Jane : Uh...
Lisbon (understanding what Jane is doing) : Damn it, Jane. He's in a trance, isn't he?
Jane : Wha... I-I'd describe it more as a-a deep relaxation.
Lisbon : Hypnotized. You hypnotized him.
Jane : Well, I was doing a favor for the Organized Crime Unit.
Lisbon (furious now) : Those cowboys? (she knocks on the window) Time to go, guys.
Jane : You know, I was just about to get the truth out of him. Uh, he killed two people. If you walk very quietly to the door, I still might...
Lisbon : How many times have I told you... no hypnotism? It's illegal, and it's unethical, and you cannot keep on doing it.
Jane : Just calm yourself, woman. It's no big thing.
Lisbon : Oh, really? This man's lawyer is right this minute coming down the hallway, wearing a mean face. Something tells me he'll argue that point with you. Let's go.
Jane : Well, let me get him out of his trance first, huh?
Lisbon : Well, be quick about it.
Jane : Yes, ma'am.
George’s lawyer enters in the room.
The lawyer : I'd like to speak to my client alone.
Lisbon : Of course.
The lawyer : Now.
Jane : George, nice to talk to you. Good luck with all your future endeavors. That's mine.
The lawyer : So, George... George? Are you all right?
Jane and Lisbon leave the room.
Lisbon : It's not funny.
Jane : It is a little. What do you got?
Lisbon : Unincorporated country club development outside of town, Scarlett Marquesa, 33, female.
On the crime scene :
Rigsby : Hostess of the party, married, one kid. Right about 10:20 this evening, the party was in full swing. Scarlett comes running over the balcony, clutching her throat and screaming. She falls down to her death.
Lisbon : Where's the husband and the kid?
Rigsby : They're with neighbors, badly shook up.
Lisbon : We'll wait to talk to them until tomorrow morning. Poison, huh?
Rigsby : Must be. Frothing at the lips, discoloration. The medical examiner thinks so, too. But we haven't found the source yet. We don't know where she ingested the poison. She came from up there, but the actual poisoning could've taken place anywhere. It's a big house.
Jane (to a medical examiner) : Uh, just a moment. Excuse me. That's interesting. Look. Look at her eyes.
Rigsby : What?
Jane doesn’t answer.
Lisbon : Hello? Use your words.
Jane runs to the floor and Risgby follows him.
Jane : She had more mascara on her right eye than she did on her left, which means that she was halfway through reapplying her makeup when she was poisoned, so... she was in the...
bathroom. (Jane and his colleague are searching the source of the poison) Ah. (Jane shows a glass) Ah. The source of the poison, I have no doubt. (he sees a tissue) What do we got here? Motive.
Villa Marsante Estates, Sacramento, Californie :
Lisbon and Jane arrive in front of the victim’s house. Two women are with Mr Marquesa.
Lisbon (showing her badge) : Mr. Marquesa, I'm Agent Lisbon, CBI.
Victor Marquesa : Yes, thanks for coming. These are dear friends, Asra Hadami and Mandy Riljek. They've been looking after me and Oscar.
Asra : Anything we can do.
Mandy : Vic, I'll make sure Jim stops by as soon as he gets back into town.
Victor Marquesa : Thanks, Mandy.
Asra : Okay. Take care, Victor.
Asra and Mandy leave the place..
Victor : Please. Come in.
Lisbon and Jane follow him and Victor give us his wife’s handbag.
Victor : Scarlett kept everything in here. Very organized. (he gives the handbag to Jane)
Lisbon : We'll get it back to you just as soon as we can.
Victor : Thank you.
They go to the kitchen.
Lisbon : The tox screen tells us your wife's drink was laced with rat poison.
Victor : Rat poison ?
Victor’s kid, Oscar, comes into the kitchen.
Victor : Oscar. Oscar.
Oscar (playing) : Argh! Argh! Argh! -
Victor : Who would do such a thing?
Lisbon : Somebody who wanted to get even?
Jane : Who's your guess? Whose name just popped into your head?
Victor : Scarlett had no enemies. Everyone loved Scarlett.
Jane : Even Asra?
Victor (surprised) : Asra? Yes, they got along fine. Why ask about her?
Jane : You're having an affair with Asra, aren't you?
Victor : What? No.
Jane : No? Really?
Victor : No. Really. And what the heck kind of police are you, anyhow asking me a question like that?
Jane : Sorry, my mistake. You are business partners?
Victor : She's my accounts manager.
Jane : Ah, okay. Now I understand.
Victor : Understand what?
Jane : Doesn't matter. Do you know where her keys are? I can't find 'em. They're not in here.
Victor : I couldn't find them. I wanted to move her car.
Jane : Not to worry. I'm sure they'll show up.
Lisbon : What is it you do for a living, exactly?
Victor : I develop real estate.
Lisbon : It’s a tough market.
Victor : Tell me about it ! But I'm confident that it'll turn around soon.
Lisbon : And did Scarlett work with you?
Victor : No, she was the artistic type. She made jewelry. That was her thing. Made a pretty good business out of it, in fact... Selling to friends and neighbors.
Lisbon : Well, what kind of jewelry was it? Was it expensive stuff?
Victor : No. Just trinkets, really... Earrings, bracelets...
Jane : Can we see some?
Victor : Sure.
Victor leaves the kitchen. Lisbon looks Jane without understand his think. Victor comes back with the jewelry and show that to the policemen.
Jane : That's very nice.
Lisbon : Was there any particular reason for the party last night?
Victor : Scarlett’s idea. She, um, thought it was necessary to let people know we're doing fine. And we are... Doing fine.
Lisbon : Did anybody at the party behave in an unusual manner? Any odd incidents?
Victor : No.
Lisbon : And you knew everybody at the party personally?
Victor : Yes, good friends.
Lisbon : Oh, we're gonna need a list.
Victor : Sure. From the country club, mostly. Scarlett was elected chair of her women's committee there. It's a big deal in this community, very prestigious. I was so proud of her, but it meant she had to spend a lot more time at the club.
Oscar : Argh! Argh!
Victor : Oscar ! Stop. Please. (to the policemen) Pardon me. Um, are we done here?
Lisbon : No, that's all for now. We'll be in touch if we need anything else.
Jane (looking again the jewelry) : Very nice.
Jane and Lisbon go out.
Lisbon : What's your deal with Asra Hadami?
Jane : Well, you saw the dinner theater way in which she hugged Victor. She's deceiving him. I thought it was a love affair gone awry, but it isn't. It's something else. She's probably stealing from him.
Lisbon : I'll have Van Pelt pull her financials. At the same time she pulls the Marquesas'.
Jane : You know, we should go take a look at this country club.
Lisbon : Yeah, talk to the women's committee she chairs. Bring Rigsby with you.
To the Country Club :
Rigsby and Jane arrive.
Rigsby : Someone here knows the truth.
Jane : Oh? And how so?
Rigsby : Well, poison and a message in lipstick. Says this murder was done by a woman. And women have no secrets from other women.
Jane : Well, unless it was a cunning man posing as a woman.
Rigsby : What, you think?
Jane : No.
They arrive on a tennis court.
A blond woman : Semifinal pairs, players 23 and 45 To court one now, please. 23 and 45 to court one.
Rigsby (showing his badge) : Good morning, ma'am. California bureau of investigation. I'm detective Rigsby. This is Jane.
The woman : Hi, Heather.
Jane : Nice to meet you.
Heather : Everyone's been expecting you. Poor Scarlett. It's terrible. How can I help you?
Rigsby : We'd like to start by talking to members of the women's committee.
Heather : Sure thing.
She wants to call the women with a micro but Rigsby stop her.
Rigsby : Uh, perhaps we'd, uh, gather them more discreetly?
Heather : Oh, everyone will know in minutes, anyhow. Jackie, Patience, Mandy, the police are here, and they want to talk to us about Scarlett's murder. Come to the rose courtyard. And, everybody, the silent auction closes shortly, so get those bids in now, folks. (to the men) I'll show you the way.
Jane (smiling to Rigsby) : I love a silent auction.
To the rose gardon of the Club :
Rigsby : So, uh, let's start with some names.
Heather (introducing herself) : Uh, Patience Broadbent... Mandy Riljek you've met.
Mandy : Hi.
Heather : Jackie shaper.
Jackie : Thank god you're here. You're gonna find this maniac, won't you?
Jane : We'll try. Uh, were you all at Scarlett's party?
Mandy : Yes. Yes, we all have to go to the chairwoman's parties. It's a rule.
Jane : The chairwoman is a prestigious position, isn't it?
Patience : Oh, yes, it is.
Jane : She would make her fair share of enemies, I'd expect.
Jackie : You could say that.
Patience : If you have something to say, say it. Speak your mind, bitch.
Jackie : Oh, okay. You want it all out there? He asked about enemies, and that's what you were. She hated Scarlett because she wanted to be chair and Scarlett whipped her butt in the election. Schooled her, right, Mandy?
Mandy : Oh, I'm not getting into this one.
Patience : Right. I missed out on scoring the private office with all that cool stationery with my name on it. So I killed her. Have you any idea how idiotic you sound?
Jackie : You're the idiot.
Rigsby : Tell you what. It's probably best if we conduct interviews with each of you separately.
Jackie : You're always so jealous of everybody.
Rigsby decided to separate them for their questionnary.
Jane : Do you remember anything odd happening the night of the party?
Heather : I don't know. It was just the usual mojitos and chitchat, but...
Jane : But what?
Heather : I don't know if I should tell you this but I saw Scarlett arguing with Asra Hadami. It looked kind of angry. Some say something more than business might be going on between Asra Hadami and Victor Marquesa. I don't know if that's true and I don't really follow the gossip.
Jane : Hmm. Who does?
Jane and Rigsby leave her and join Mandy in another room.
Jane : We're told you're the gossip queen around here.
Mandy : People tell me things.
Jane : So... Who's having an affair with Victor Marquesa?
Mandy : I don't know. Who? Tell.
Jane : Asra Hadami?
Mandy is laughing.
Jane : That's a funny idea?
Mandy : No, it's just...No. Victor and Asra are good friends, nothing more. Asra had nothing to do with this.
Jane : No? What's the general opinion? Who did this?
Mandy : My guess?
Jane : Yeah.
Mandy : Victor.
Rigsby : What makes you think that?
Mandy : Nothing, really. I mean, Victor's a nice guy but that's who kills women, isn't it? Their husbands, 90% of the time.
Rigsby : 70%, I think.
Jane : Hmm. He's right.
Jane and Rigsby leave Mandy and go on the tennis court to meet Patience. At the end of her match, which she had won, Jane questionned her.
Jane : That was some great play. You could maybe do a little more topspin on your returns but it was a very nice play.
Patience : The answers are yes, I disliked her, no, I didn't kill her.
Jane : You hate to lose, don't you?
Patience : Yes, unlike all those many people that love it. I'm in the semifinals, for god sake.
Jane : Yeah. Oh, of course. Good luck with that.
Patience : Yeah, I have to go. I have another match in half an hour and that toxic dwarf, Mandy Riljek, is trying to outbid me in the silent auction. What she needs two romantic nights for at the Cliff side?
Jane : I don't know.
Patience : So I'll save us all some time and tell you who did this, if you like.
Jane : I'd like that very much.
Patience : Asra Hadami.
Jane : Really? Why?
Patience : She's having an affair with Victor.
Jane : How do you know that?
Patience : I just have an eye for that stuff. Asra must have killed Scarlett so that she could have Victor for herself. Don't know why. If you ask me, he's a loser.
Jane : Well, thank you. Oh, by the way, if you disliked Scarlett Marquesa so much, why are you wearing earrings that she made?
Patience : She makes good earrings. It's nice to meet you.
Jane : Nice meeting you, too.
Jane and Rigsby are now interrogating Jackie. Jane is looking around him during Rigsby’s questionnary.
Rigsby : You two were close, weren't you?
Jackie : We were very close.Being her deputy in the women's committee. We spoke every day.
Rigsby : Uh, did you notice anything, uh, different… About, uh, your conversations?
Jackie : She talked a lot about moving away. She was so tired of keeping up at all costs.
Rigsby : At all costs?
Jackie : Just working so hard.
Jane : Do you have a key for this?
Jackie : Oh, no. Only Scarlett has a key. This is the chairwoman's office and that's the chairwoman's safe.
Jane : That makes sense.
Jackie : I don't know anything about that.
Jane : Scarlett's keys are missing. That's interesting.
CBI’s office :
Jane : We need to get that safe open.
Lisbon : We're gonna need a search warrant for that.
Rigsby : I'm on it.
Lisbon : Did you get anything from Scarlett's friends?
Jane : Well, everybody has a different theory. They're all hiding something. I don't know what.
Lisbon : Did you hear anything from forensics about the lipstick on the napkin?
Cho : Not yet. They're jammed up, as usual. Budget cuts.
Jane lies on his sofa.
Van Pelt : Boss, I just now got access to Asra Hadami's financials. She cleared out her bank accounts this morning. Checking, savings... took out about $125,000 in cash.
Lisbon : Going on the run maybe? She didn't happen to buy any rat poison recently, did she?
Van Pelt : That would be nice, but no. No record of it.
Cho : That was the Marsante security patrol calling. They just found Hadami's house empty. She's gone.
Lisbon : Great. A fugitive.
Jane (putting up his hand)Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! I... I know where she is.
Cliffside Inn :
Rigsby and Van Pelt arrive in front of the door of the 26th chamber. Rigsby opens the door.
Rigsby (showing his badge) : CBI!
Van Pelt and Rigsby see Asra and Mandy in the same bed. The look surprised and worried.
Return to the CBI :
Grace joins Lisbon in a corridor.
Van Pelt : Boss?
Lisbon : Hmm?
Van Pelt : I've been here nearly six months now, half a year.
Lisbon : What do you want? Half a cake?
Van Pelt : I want to take lead on this interview.
Lisbon : Okay.
Van Pelt (surprised) : Okay?
Lisbon : Yeah. Sure.
Van Pelt : Thanks, boss.
CBI’s question room :
Van Pelt : Why were you running, Miss Hadami?
Asra : No reason. Stress. I needed space.
Van Pelt : Nothing to do with the argument you had with Scarlett Marquesa the night she died?
Asra : I didn't have an argument with her.
Van Pelt : We hear differently.
Asra : No argument. I swear, I didn't kill her. This is absurd.
Van Pelt : No more absurd than you clearing out your accounts and abandoning your home for no reason.
Asra : Maybe I need a lawyer.
Van Pelt : Say the word. What he'll tell you... if you're not involved in the murder… Best speak up.
Asra : I ran because I knew the murder would expose some issues that I would like to keep private.
Van Pelt : Such as your relationship with Mandy Riljek?
Asra : Exactly. News like that could be ruinous.
Van Pelt (not convinced) : True, but not the kind of thing you abandon your house for. You said "issues." what are the other issues?
Asra : I didn't wanna have to look Victor in the face and tell him I'd helped run. Everything he worked so hard for into the ground.
Van Pelt : How did you help do that?
Asra : I borrowed money from the company's cash reserve.
Van Pelt : How much?
Asra : A little over half a million.
Van Pelt : And where did it go?
Asra : I made some poor investment choices that I had to cover quickly.
Van Pelt : So you stole...
Asra : I borrowed from the reserve. I skimmed the money from each development deal that should have gone into the company's reserve account as backup. We were making so many deals.I knew I'd get it back before it would matter. But then the deals and the funding dried up and suddenly, that reserve became very important. I sold anything I could get my hands on to cover the money.
CBI’s team’s desk :
Mandy is pacing up and downing.
Rigsby : Mm. Take a seat.
Mandy : Why am I even here? I've done nothing wrong.
Rigsby : Be with you in just one moment. Ah. Please. Well, you were found in a compromising position with a murder suspect.
Mandy : How did you know how to find us anyway? You been spying on me?
Rigsby : Well, you outbid Patience for a romantic weekendn and your husband Jim's away. And you laughed at the idea of Victor and Asra as lovers.
Mandy (worried) : Nobody knows I'm here, right? If this gets out, it'll be a huge scandal.
Rigsby : Nobody knows you're here. Sign this, and you're good to go.
Cho is arriving.
Cho : Judge's clerk says we won't get a search warrant for Scarlett's safe until tomorrow morning. Then we'll go in and tear the place apart.
Rigsby : J...
Cho: Oh. Sorry.
Rigsby (to Mandy): You didn't hear that. It's confidential.
Mandy : Confidential? Oh, of course.
Rigsby : No, seriously. Don't tell anyone, okay?
Mandy : I understand. May I leave now?
Rigsby : Yeah, please.
She’s leaving.
Rigsby (to Cho) : Not bad. Your delivery was a bit wooden.
Cho : Wooden? Me? Yeah, and you're Marlon Brando.
To the victim’s house :
Van Pelt and Lisbon are interrogating Victor Marquesa about Asra’s theft.
Victor : I can't believe it. Asra's been with me for over five years. I mean, she was with me in the trenches. I can't believe this.
Van Pelt : After going over your accounts, we had a couple of questions.
Victor : Sure.
Van Pelt : You’ve talked about cash crises in your business but regular cash deposits were made to your personal accounts somewhere upwards of $5,000.
Victor : Scarlett's deposits. (to his son)Oscar, come get your lunch.
Lisbon : Those are some pretty hefty deposits for somebody not really working. Where'd the money come from?
Victor : Uh, her jewelry business.
Lisbon : I thought you said it was a small side business.
Victor : Well, it was, but recently her pieces were getting a lot of interest, and apparently, uh, she made a deal with a couple of boutiques.
Van Pelt : Do you know which ones?
Victor : I never asked.
Van Pelt : Without her money, you would have fallen behind months ago.
Victor : I know all too well. It was my wife who had to save our butts recently.
Oscar : Dad?
Victor :What's the matter?
Oscar : You made it wrong. Mommy never puts all this stuff in it. She knows I like it plain.
Victor : Can we make a compromise, buddy? I... I need to talk to these nice police ladies. Now I'll make it better next time. I promise. Now would you please just eat the sandwich? (to the police ladies) Sorry about that.
Lisbon : It's not a problem.
Van Pelt : According to your wife's phone records, she traded a lot of calls with several disposable cell phones.
Victor : Well, I don't know who she would have been talking to.
Van Pelt : In her day planner, she had a regular weekly date noted down with an address in Marysville. She had one scheduled for later today. Do you know anything about that?
Victor : No, I don't know what that's about but I know she used to go to Marysville a lot for the antique jewelry markets and stuff.
Lisbon (hearing her phone ring) : Excuse me. Lisbon.
Cho : Results on the lipstick. No traces of D.N.A. were found but the color, "tongue in cheek," is a limited edition, sold only in a few high-end stores.
Lisbon : Tongue in cheek... that's cute. Look, secure access to each of the stores receipt records so we can search through them. Then I want you to meet us at 65434 East Boulevard. It's in Marysville
Cho : On my way.
To the Country Club :
Jane and Rigsby arrive on the tennis court.
Jane : I'll, uh, I'll catch up to you.
He joins Heather while Rigsby is chating up Jackie.
Jane : Hi.
Heather : Hey.
Jane : Who's winning?
Heather : Oh, I don't know. I don't follow the play, to be honest.
Jane : Yeah, it's kind of silly, isn't it? Everybody's so serious over a game.
Heather : Exactly. Like it matters who wins a stupid trophy.
Jane : I guess people feel they need a purpose.
Heather : Yeah, well, my purpose died this year at the age of 16.
Jane : Oh. I'm sorry. Boy or girl?
Heather : Girl. High as a kite with one of her friends. She wrapped her car around a tree. Friend got away without a scratch, thank god.
Jane : What was her name?
Heather : Rachel. Once you lose a child, all this striving seems kinda ridiculous, you know?
Jane : Yeah. Unfortunately, I do. Why not leave it all behind? Just go away?
Heather : I can't afford to leave. I have negative equity on my house. Oh, nice play, Karen! Besides, these are my friends. This is all I have.
Marysville :
Some motorcyclists are racing when Lisbon and Cho arrive.
Lisbon : According to Scarlett's planner, the meeting's here. Let's see if we can spot the contact. (Van Pelt joins them) I don't know. Maybe we'll get lucky.
The three collegues go each other in their direction. Cho notes a strange shop: some men are dealing.
Cho : Hi, guys. What are you doing?
One of the men, afraid, runs away and Cho pourchases him. The runaway is knopcked down by a motorcycle which permits to Cho to arrest him.
The man : Aah!
Cho : Get up. This way.
The man : All right, all right, all right.
To the Country Club :
Jane and Rigsby enter in the room where there is the victim’s safe.
Rigsby : I should have brought some snacks. I don't see this working in a hurry.
Jane : Ah, you shouldn't go hungry long. Mandy's news will have spread quickly. Everyone knows that tomorrow, the safe will be opened. It's now or never for whoever took Scarlett's keys.
Marysville :
Cho is searching the runaway. Van Pelt and Lisbon join him.
The man : Hey, easy there. That is antique Mexican silver.
Lisbon : Maybe next time you'll think before trying to outrun an officer of the law. I'm assuming this isn't candy. Why were you meeting Scarlett Marquesa?
The man : So we could exchange beauty secrets. You mind if I smoke?
Lisbon : Yeah, I do.
The man : Oh.
Lisbon : Van Pelt, what do you got?
Van Pelt : Wardell Suggs, A.K.A. "Digger." He's been arrested for several counts of petty theft fraud and assault.
Lisbon : That's very impressive.
Digger : It could be better.
Lisbon : Why were you meeting Scarlett?
Digger : What'd she tell you about me?
Lisbon : Nothing. She's dead.
Digger : I... I didn't have anything to do with that.
Cho : Hey, boss, come take a look.
Lisbon joins him in front of Digger’s car.
Lisbon : Would you look at that? The mother lode. Let's talk, huh? The hell, I got a strike to give.
Digger : Scarlett was one of my biggest customers. Painkillers, tranquilizers, diet pills... by the hundreds.
Lisbon : Scarlett was dealing prescription drugs?
Digger : Yep.
Lisbon : Where did you two meet?
Digger : Swap meet. She was trying to sell that god-awful jewelry. She looked desperate, so I told her there's easier ways to make money.
Cho : Were you doing a deal tonight?
Digger : Supposed to. Lately, I've been having to listen to her yammer about quitting. Then she'd buy some bag, saying this is the last time she's doing it. Of course she'd always come back.
Lisbon : She was gonna quit?
Digger : Yep. A matter of fact, last couple of weeks, I've been getting calls from another girl, saying Scarlett gave her my info. Same prissy kind of voice. Chick said she'd be interested in setting up her own situation when Scarlett quit.
Lisbon :Does this chick have a name?
Digger : You know, I'm not big on names at first but I do have her number.
Lisbon : Why don't you give her a call?
To the Country Club :
Patience enters in the room where Jane and Rigsby are. Se doesn’t see them. She has got Scarlet’s keys and she wants to open the safe. Her phone rings.
Patience (upset) : Digger, why are you calling me now?
Jane : In your own time Ma'am, if you would like to take a seat.
To the CBI :
Jane and Lisbon, behind the question’s room window, are looking Patience who is making up. Rigsby comes into the room. He asks to Patience to have a seat. She groans but cooperates.
Rigsby : Thank you so much. How did you come to have Scarlett Marquesa's keys?
Patience : I took them when I went to offer my condolences to Victor. Naughty I know, but I couldn't wait.
Rigsby : It's not naughty. It's a felony. You wanted to get your hands on her pill supply.
Patience : Nonsense. I opened that safe out of idle curiosity. I had no idea there were any pills in there. I simply wanted to measure the windows for new drapes. I'll be the next chair of the committee.
Rigsby : Oh. Then why not wait till it's official?
Patience : Am I here because of keys?
Rigsby : Explain the nature of your relationship with Wardell Suggs.
Patience : Who?
Rigsby : Digger?
Patience : I liked his jewelry.
Rigsby : Okay. Were you aware that Scarlett Marquesa was selling illegal prescription drugs in the Villa Marsante Estates?
Patience : Who didn't know? Well, except for you all.
Rigsby : If everyone knew, then why didn't anyone come forth?
Patience : And risked being ostracized or caught up in the vulgarity of it all?
Rigsby : Not likely. She was doing a booming business and you wanted to be part of it, maybe a little too much.
Patience : So I killed her? Please.Hello. She was a drug dealer. The people she dealt with must have done her in other dealers.
Rigsby : Or a highly capable rival straight in the middle of her own community?
Patience : You have found no drugs or poison on me or in my home. The keys were taken after she was killed and I only opened that safe out of idle curiosity. You taped together your whole theory with a couple of random conversations I've had with a drug dealer. Does that about sum it up?
Jane (to Lisbon) : Well, when she puts it like that, it does seem pretty thin.
Lisbon : Yeah. She's a piece of work, isn't she?
Jane : Yeah.
Lisbon : We're gonna have to cut her loose for now, but I think some discreet surveillance might help our cause.
In front of Patience’s house :
Cho and Rigsby are in watching. Cho is reading while Rigsby play with a lipstick.
Cho : If you were thinking of trying that on, don't. Not your shade.
Rigsby : What do you think about older women?
Cho : Where is this coming from? I don't think about older women. My mother's an older woman.
Rigsby : Not old old, just older, you know? Older than you.
Cho : Why you asking? You're not trying to set me up with somebody, are you?
Rigsby : It turns out... if you look at the available scientific evidence on the internet... And they've got less hang-ups, they like themselves way more than younger women and they're at their sexual peak. I mean, that's what the research says anyhow.
Cho : What the hell happened to you at that country club?
Patience gets out of her house and come to them with sandwiches.
Rigsby : Nothing. I'm just saying that... umm, she spotted us.
Patience : Afternoon, boys. I was making myself a panini. And thought I'd bring you some, too. - Oh. Thanks, ma'am.
Rigsby : Oh, and just so you know,
Patience : I am headed to the club for a massage so you don't need to follow too close. Relax. Have a bite to eat first. I'll see you there.
Rigsby : Yes, ma'am.
She goes to her house.
Cho : "yes, ma'am, thank you, ma'am." what is wrong with you?
Rigsby : Well, she surprised me.
Cho : What's in the sandwiches?
Rigsby : Well, it's a panini, if you don't mind. It's, uh, ham and cheese.
Cho : Yeah, who knows what else?
To the victim’s house :
Jane and Lisbon are explaining to Victor Marques his wife was a drug dealer.
Victor : My God. Drugs? I can't believe it.
Lisbon : Using jewelry sales as a cover, your wife was dealing prescription drugs... Painkillers mostly. Speed, diet pills. Some of them were coming in from Mexico , other ones were stolen from pharmacies.
Jane : You seem genuinely surprised. A lot of people around here knew about her.
Victor : I had no idea. You don't think I had something to do with this?
Lisbon : She was moving an awful lot of inventory.
Victor (upset) : I had nothing to do with this.
Lisbon : How could you have not known she was medicating half the women in the neighborhood?
Victor : She lied to me ! (his son arrives on the balcony but anybody sees him) Maybe she was just trying to protect me from the shame.
Lisbon : Or maybe it was easier just to turn a blind eye as long as the money was coming in.
Victor : No. If I had known she was doing this, I would have tried to stop her.
Patrick notes Oscar’s presence and say him hello.
Jane : Hi. I'm patrick.
Oscar : Oscar.
Jane : You want to talk, Oscar?
Oscar agrees and Jane comes into the house.
Jane : Pretty heavy stuff going on, right?
Oscar : Yeah.
Jane : I'm sorry about your mom.
Oscar : Me, too. My dad is sad because you guys can't find who did it. But I don't mind about that.
I just want her back.
Jane : She can't come back. You know that, don't you?
Oscar : I know that. I'm 9. I will never see her again until I'm dead, too. Then I'll go stay with her in heaven.
Jane : Well, that sounds good. But you know what I noticed you're really good at that could help you right now?
Oscar : What?
Jane : Make-believe. You are very good at it. A master like you, you wanted to talk to your mom, you could make-believe she was here and do whatever you like. I do it all the time.
Oscar : You talk to my mom?
Jane : No, not your mom. I talk to my wife.
Oscar : She's dead?
Jane : Yeah. Yeah. But I talk to her all the time. You should try it. It's very good.
Oscar : I guess.
Jane : Well, whatever. This is cool. (he takes one of his swords) You any good with this sword?
Oscar (smiling for the first time) : I'm okay.
Jane : Oh, really? En garde.
They’re fighting when Lisbon comes back. When she saw Jane with the kid, a light appears in her eyes but she comes back to reality and says to Jane that it’s time to go.
Oscar : Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh! I got you!
Jane : Ahh! Please. Mercy. Mercy. (he shows Lisbon to Oscar) Fair maiden. D'Artagnan, I have to go. Good-bye.
To the Country Club :
Cho and Rigsby are waiting Patience’s retourn and Rigsby is boring.
Rigsby : Ugh, Spa stuff takes forever. How long can a massage be?
Cho : No, they do all sorts of things to you besides a massage... facials, waxing, mud.
Rigsby : How do you know so much?
Cho : I bought a certificate for my mom.
Rigsby : Hi, Mrs. Shaper.
Jackie : Now you know, you must call me Jackie. And it's "ms.", not "mrs". Divorced.
Rigsby : Sorry... Jackie.
Jackie : He was a good man, but weak, essentially. He just couldn't see...
Rigsby : Wait. What are you wearing on your lips?
Jackie : Excuse me?
Rigsby : The color. What... what color is this?
Jackie : Tongue in cheek. You like it?
Rigsby : Where did you get it?
Jackie : I bought it at the boutique in town.
Rigsby : How long have you been wearing this shade?
Jackie : I just bought it today. I saw it on Patience Broadbent at Scarlett's party. I just had to have it. It's a crazy price but what the heck?
Rigsby : You're positive that it's tongue in cheek?
Jackie : I have it right here.
Rigsby : And you definitely saw Patience wearing it first at Scarlett Marquesa's party?
Jackie : Is that a pickup line?
A person screams : Aah! Aah! Aah! Aah! Aah! Aah!
Cho and Rigsby hurry up and discover Patience’s body. Later the rest of the team joins them.
Cho : No detecectable prints on the knife.
Lisbon : Surveillance tapes ?
Rigsby : The Spa didn't believe in them. Something to do with disturbing the chi.
Lisbon : I don't get it. Why kill patience? Why now?
Van Pelt : Perhaps it was part of the plan all along.
Jane : No, this was hasty. Patience became the new target.
Lisbon : Revenge for Scarlett's death? Victor was quick to anger. (to Rigsby) Rigsby, find out Victor Marquesa's recent whereabouts.
Rigsby : Yes, boss.
Jane (not convinced by Lisbon’s idea) : It could have been someone else. The competition wiping out the dealer and her heir apparent or...
Lisbon : Or what?
Jane : Victor does fit nicely, doesn't he?
To the Country Club’s bar :
Jane joins Jackie and Heather to talk to them about Patience’s murder.
Jackie : Can you believe that patience got stabbed?
Jane : Here we are. It's like a mafia hit. I'm never going in that Spa again, I will tell you that. Tragic set of events. I didn't see it coming.
Heather : So what do you think? This is some kind of drug war?
Jane : Could be, but stabbings are usually crimes of passion. This is, uh, this is very personal.
Heather : Mm. Mm. So what's next?
Jane : CBI are already putting the pieces together. In fact, uh.. .W... never mind.
Jackie : What?
Jane : No, I... I... I shouldn't talk about it. Cause it's still an ongoing case.
Jackie : You know, you can't just leave something like that hanging.
Jane : Well, I'm sorry, you know but I will get myself in a lot of trouble. Oh, come on, girls. All right, listen. Can you promise me That this willtjust stay between us?
Heather and Jackie : Yes. Yes, of course.
Jane : You promise?
Heather and Jackie : I promise.
Jane : Okay, we're going after Victor Marquesa.
Jackie (surprised) : Victor? Oh, I don't believe it. He doesn't even look like the type.
Heather : On what grounds?
Jane : We think that he killed Patience out of revenge for the murder of his wife.
Heather : But you said there was no proof Patience was guilty.
Jane : I guess victor didn't want to wait around for proof.
Jackie : What's gonna happen to Oscar?
Jane : Mother murdered, now dad's a murderer. Once they arrest the father, he'll be placed in foster care.
Jackie : Oh, how dreadful.
Jane : Mm.
Hetaher : That poor child.
Jane : It is. Mm.
To Victor’s home :
A police car is parked in front of Victor’s villa.Everyone is in the street to watch. Jane and Lisbon get out the house.
Jane : I guess they couldn't keep the secret.
Lisbon : Guess they can't. Let's do it.
Rigsby leaves the house with Victor who is handcuffed.
Victor : It's gonna be all right, son.
Oscar : Dad!
Victor : I promise.
Oscar : No!
Victor : It's gonna be okay.
Oscar : Where are you going?
Victor : Don’t worry! I'll be right back !
Oscar : No! Dad! Come back! No!
Victor is forced to get in the police’s car. Heather, who can’t support this scene anymore, comes to Jane and beg him to stop this.
Heather : Stop, stop, stop. You have to stop this.
Jane : No. No, Heather. No, we can't.
Oscar : Dad! Dad!
Jane : This is justice being served.
Heather : How can you say that? Look what you're putting that boy through.
Jane : He'll forget eventually. It's fine.
Heather : No. No, he won't.
Jane: It's fine.
Heather : No. No, it's not.
Jane : Why?
Heather : Because I did it! I killed them. I killed them both. Oh, God !
CBI’s question room :
Jane is interrogating Heather.
Jane : Okay. I first suspected it was you because it seemed that everybody else at the club wore some of Scarlett's jewelry, not you.
Heather : That's it? Jewelry?
Jane : The more we talked, the more I felt your pain and anger. Losing your daughter has unhinged you.
Heather : Unhinged? Yeah, I suppose it has. (She’s crying) My daughter... Rachel. She loved to dance. (flashback) Didn't matter what kind of music either, a toe would start tapping and... she was just so full of life. She had taken several painkillers with alcohol before she got behind the wheel. One of her neighborhood friends got them from her mother who got them from Scarlett.
Jane : I understand your anger.
Heather (with a painfully and angry voice) : It was like they ripped my soul out clean. But the rest of the world just kept moving right along. It was like I was the only one who remembered what happened. So when I saw her flitting about town, selling her pills without a care in the world, still hosting parties at her house, happily dancing around without a stitch of the misery I was carrying, I snapped. I killed her. I didn't want any other person to have to experience what I did.
Jane : And Patience?
Heather : She told everyone at the club not to worry. She was gonna take over Scarlett's business and keep the pills coming, like nothing had happened. Like no lessons had been learned. I had to finish what I started. I had to.
Lisbon : I'll get this transcribed for you to sign.
She leaves the room, worried about her partner.
Jane : Now that it's done, does it feel better?
Heather : It doesn't change a thing.
Team’s desk :
Victor and his son are coming.
Victor : Agent Lisbon.
Lisbon : Mr. Marquesa, hi.
Victor : I want to thank you and your team. Although, I must admit, that whole scene in front of the house...
Oscar : It was make-believe, dad.
Victor : (to his son) Sorry. (to the team)The make-believe was a bit unorthodox and unpleasant. But I'm sure you all know what you're doing.
Lisbon : Most of the time. I want to apologize if we were tough on you.
Victor : No, it's what I needed to hear. We're moving out of villa Marsante and headed back to my hometown. My son and I have a lot of catching up to do.
Lisbon : Take care.
Victor : Thanks.
In the corridor, they meet Jane.
Victor : Mr. Jane. Thank you.
Jane : Oh, it's nothing. Forget about it. Take care. Good luck. Bye. (he comes in the desk) Another minute, and I would have missed them. I do hate it when people say thank you.
Rigsby : Why?
Lisbon (amused) : He likes to play the lone ranger. Who was that masked man?" "I never got a chance to thank him." (Van Pelt smiles too)
Jane : Exactly. (he saw Jackie and say to Rigsby) Uh, I don't want to alarm you but your friend Jackie has just walked in behind you and she is looking fierce.
Rigsby : Oh, I know. I asked her out to dinner.
